Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024
To appreciate and honour lives that were taken in times of National Socialism, Gunter Demnig’s project, “Stolpersteine” (Remembrance Stones), started 1992. The stones are small, golden, square plaques that are built into the pavement (often in front of the houses the people lived in). They state the full name of a person, their year of birth as well as their death and oftentimes what misery they went through to that point. Their name comes from their purpose: They’re supposed to make pedestrians trip, to make them notice the golden plaque and remind them of the murdering, torture and persecution these people had to go through.
